Forest of AeForest of Ae
Very close to Trigony is one of the most wonderful outdoor spaces that you can visit, we think in the whole of Scotland. The Ae Forest close to the similarly names Ae village is just off the A701 Dumfries to Moffat road that joins with the A74(M).
Take the A76 from Trigony and after 5 minutes there’s a left hand turn signposted to Ae, Loch Ettrick. Follow the winding road for approximately 10 miles and you will see signs for the Forest of Ae. You will eventually get to a crossroads just before Ae village, follow signs to the Forest of Ae Forest car park at grid reference NX 984 894 where you will also find a bike shop, tourist centre and cafe.
You can follow mountain bike trails from the “Naze car park” to get there continue past the main car park for about mile (1km) take the first left, signposted ‘Ae Valley car park’, grid reference NX 983 902.
The Forest is a wonderful place to wander and is very peaceful, far from any madding crowd or tourist hoard. The dog walking seeking peace and contemplation is going to find this very rewarding. Take a stroll along the restful “Water of Ae” and spot local flora and fauna along the way.
Wander along the Water of Ae route and then climb the hill offering amazing views, across to Queensberry Hill and Harestanes Wind Farm.
It is suggested that you mind your footing and possibly older dogs (and their companions) may not find the entire walk to their comfort level.
